Our Testing Philosophy and Principles

Actionable, Independent rigorous testing available for free
In a world where the line between marketing and reviews is becoming blurrier everyday, we believe that providing, actionable and free of conflict of interest recommendations of online products based on transparent and rigorous testing is critical to help online users decide which are the best and safest products possible to accomplish their goals.

Here are the key principles that guide our approach to reach this goal and make us unique:
Provide actionable recommendations
A
As a non-profit, our only concern is helping you buy products that work and are safe based on your needs. This is why we focus on rigorously testing products for specific usages and making sure they will work for those. This way we are confident that if we say it will work and it's safe to use it will be the case. We believe that the most important questions to answer to help you buy good online products are: will it work? and is it safe to use? Those vital questions deserve a clear yes or no answer which is why we choose to focus on recommendations and don't provide ratings. A recommended product will be safe to use and will work for your use-case. No ambiguity.
Let's take tea as a concrete example of why clear recommendation are the best way to provide valuable advice: If we recommend a specific tea it is because we have rigorously tested that it is free of toxic content and really contains only tea so you will be confident drinking it will not poison you. We don't make subjective judgments on how it tastes or if it is worth the price asked. That is up to you!

Be free of conflict of interest

C
First and foremost we are a registered non profit organization which ensures we are not here to make money out of you. On top of that, to guarantee our independence we do not accept products or money to test a specific product. Instead we have a public form to suggest what to test so we can focus on testing the product that matters to you. We do reserve the right to ignore those requests if we think the product is too niche, outside of our expertise or other criterias. We do accept donations and discounts on the testing equipment, technical supports and lab tests as our board of directors didn't deem it a conflict of interest. For more details see our FAQ page.

Our methodology and all our tests are public and freely available under the CreativeCommons license CC BY-NC 4.0 for all non-profit work. As outlined in our terms of use, our content is also made freely available for research and educational purposes. Additionally we believe the best way to serve the public is to provide unrestricted access to our data which is why all our test data and recommendations can be accessed free-of-charge without registration, or other barrier following the Open Education Resources best practices.

Maximize your donation impact

M
We pride ourselves to be very lean and do everything we can to make the best use of your donations and test as many products as we can. This led us to develop a cost-efficient multi-stage approach to testing where we only invest in costly tests when necessary. Here is how it works: when we evaluate a product, we first run a set of basic tests, and if they pass we will run more expensive/advanced tests. This approach ensures that we avoid wasting time and money on products that will not be recommended. Depending on the product, we might have two stages or more to ensure we optimize test cost as much as possible.
